How the dates are calculated
Fixed-date holidays (New Year's Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Veterans Day, Christmas) fall on the same calendar date every year. The others follow weekday rules: Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the third Monday of January, Presidents' Day the third Monday of February, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, Labor Day the first Monday of September, Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day the second Monday of October and Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of November.
For federal holidays on a fixed date, the observed day moves to the Friday before when the date is a Saturday and to the Monday after when it is a Sunday (5 U.S.C. 6103). That is why July 4, 2026 (a Saturday) is observed on Friday, July 3, and New Year's Day 2028 (a Saturday) is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027.
Federal holidays are not legal closures for private businesses; you decide when to close. This tool is a writing aid, not legal advice. Check any contracts, union agreements or local rules that apply to you, and confirm dates before you publish.
